ROSTER DESIGN

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

All rosters are designed to comply with local legislative WHS legislation, Codes of Practice and Shiftwork guidelines available from all State Government and relevant worker organisations as referenced in the useful links section.

To prevent fatigue good roster design processes must be transparent and include:

  • Consultation with all stakeholders

  • Consideration of worker family and safety issues
  • Reductions in rostered overtime
  • Long term visibility for all stakeholders
  • Avoiding quick shift changeovers, such as finishing at 11pm and starting again at 7am
  • Limiting shifts to a maximum of 12 hours including overtime
  • Limiting 12 hour shift blocks to a maximum of 4, and 8 hour shift blocks a maximum of 6
  • Using forward-rotation (i.e. morning to afternoon, afternoon to night)
  • Allocating consecutive rather then single days off, including some weekends.
